How to reduce fuel consumption

What determines fuel consumption if, for example, a person is driving on the highway? It depends on the drag coefficient of the vehicle and on the square of the vehicle’s speed. That is, roughly speaking, we have the coefficient cx * v² divided by something (I don’t remember) and as a result we get the power that we need in order to cut through the air at this speed. Why are we talking about this? If the speed is 40 km/h – this is one resistance, if the speed is 80 km/h the resistance will not be 2 times more, but will be 4 times more. And if the speed is 120 km / h, then the resistance will be 9 times greater. Usually clients do not understand this.

They come and say that the consumption on the highway is so many liters and this is a lot. The question immediately arises at what speed they were driving. In response – 140 km / h. In this case, v² is the flow. How does the manufacturer write consumption? – City/highway. One in the city, another on the highway.

The manufacturer considers the track to be 90 km / h on a flat road in 5th gear. When we overtake a truck, gas to the floor, then braking, then again, braking again, and then we flew 140 km / h. The claimed expense will never be. People have to explain this all the time. Like, people, understand the consumption of the manufacturer is measured only like this. The same Volga. There’s another problem. People say she eats a lot. In fact, the Volga has a huge figure, it has no aerodynamics. 10 at the very least licked, Priora too. By the way, these cars have good cx, so they don’t eat much on the highway.

Volga or other classics with huge gaps, mugs, her cx is such that even if she drives slowly, she will eat only because of the increased cx. Not because it’s heavy, but because of the very poor drag. Cx depends on many things. Not only from how the car is licked, but also from the gaps between the bodywork.

Here is Lazetti standing, she has millimetric gaps. That is why foreign cars are squat, but for Russia they are specially raised? That’s why foreign cars lie on the ground in order to reduce cx. The ground clearance has a very strong effect on the cx coefficient. Then the funniest thing is, we look at the car and do not see, but if we raise it on a lift. For foreign cars, everything is licked and closed there, we now also have cars. Everything is covered with all sorts of shields, so that even under the bottom everything is even, and not all sorts of clumsy things stick out. This is also resistance. It is because of cx that the Volga eats, it is because of v² that it eats from the riders.

It used to be so antler, such grooves were made above the doors, especially on the classics. Water flowed into these grooves as well. Volga and aerodynamics are incompatible things. This is an example of how not to do aerodynamics. But she is forgiven. This is a 50 year old car. They didn’t race at the time.

Now people get on the Volga with a good engine and say why it eats so much. By the way, about the expense on the Volga. I would like to give specific numbers. I had many different cars, including the Volga 3110. I bought it, traveled for a couple of years and sold it. What did I achieve with it? It generally has a very good opportunity to adjust both at idle and at speed to adjust the fuel, i.e. rebuild it inside and out. Naturally, I had the right collapse, everything was set up wonderfully. The maximum that I have achieved on the Volga is 9 liters at 90 km / h. As soon as I start to press the gas, immediately 10-11 liters.
